Did you know that as a coeliac, you need to avoid

Did you know that as a coeliac, you need to avoid ingredients that have the warning “May contain wheat or gluten” on the packaging? What that means is that the product was made in the same factory that deals with foods that contain gluten, so there’s a risk of cross-contamination.

As a 100% certified gluten-free business, we don’t use a single product that has this “may contain wheat or gluten” warning. Chocolate, icing sugar and spices, for example, can contain gluten or wheat so we ensure we source those that do not.

The upshot of this is that when you purchase one of our baked goods or breads, you can have total confidence that they are 100% gluten free.

Coeliac Awareness Week starts today. It’s one of the most common autoimmune disorders yet around 80% of Australians with coeliac disease remain undiagnosed.

It’s also largely misunderstood. For example, most people assume it’s just a gut issue but it can also affect bone healthy, fertility and neurological function.

Another little known fact is that many coeliacs can also be lactose intolerant which is why we provide a lot of dairy free and low lactose options (such as our 100% dairy-free Vegan Pie pictured).

A lot of our coeliac customers are also soy intolerant which is why we don’t put soy flour or milk in any of our products.

If you have a thyroid condition, you should probably get tested for coeliac disease because a large proportion of people who have coeliac disease also have a thyroid condition. Cherie, in fact, only discovered she had latent coeliac disease after her doctor suggested she get tested because she had a thyroid issue.

There’s a lot to learn but there’s also a lot of great information out there. One way to access the latest research and advice is to become a Coeliac Australia member. And by the way, if you’re already a member, we’re offering a 10% discount on all our products purchased online or in-store until 31st March when you spend over $80.

Please forward this post to friends or loved ones even if you don’t suspect they have coeliac disease. As we’ve said, so many people are walking around without even knowing they have it. We need to spread the word!
